Alicia Borisonik New

Alicia Borisonik has built a career around composing, teaching and performing. She plays accordion and keyboards, and was a vocalist, composer, and arranger for her band ALICIA BORISONIK AND THE ARGENTINIAN PROJECT.
Alicia has received numerous grants for her research of Argentinian music. (Canada Council for the Arts, Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Quebec, Ontario Arts Council and FACTOR).
Parallel to her profession as a musician and composer, Alicia has a long career as a music educator. She’s created a series of workshops, residencies and programs about Latin American music. Her Latin-American Music workshops have been presented at several schools in the OCDSB, OCSB and others venues such as; Canadian Museum of Civilization and National Art Gallery.
   She is the founder and Executive Director of a non-for profit organization called World Folk Music Ottawa (2013/19). World Folk Music Ottawa’s mission is to offer all kind of music projects for underserved populations, especially immigrants. The organization had received various grants from Ontario Trillium Foundation, Socan Foundation, Ontario Arts Council , Heritage Canada, Ministry of Citizenship and City of Ottawa.
Alicia has an extensive experience offering music projects to people of all ages in various multicultural communities and schools.
   She is currently offering music sessions to youth from Middle East, African and Latin American countries at Lester Pearson High School, to toddlers and their mothers at Confederation Court Community House and she has a Spanish Seniors Choir.
   Since 2018 Alicia has been working for CPAMO (Cultural Pluralism Arts Movement Ontario) in partnership with MASC and ANO (Arts Network Ottawa) organizing a series of meetings for immigrant/refugee artists from all disciplines to help develop their artistic carriers in Ottawa.

One World Music

Residency Workshop English

Alicia will share her South American cultural background and show students some unique musical instruments from around the world; students will can explore the different ways they are played and the different sounds they produce. Alicia will lead students in movement games and ‘call and response’ exercises; students will explore the rhythms used accompany a simple song.

Introduction to Classroom Percussion

New Program Residency Workshop English

Alicia will guide students through an introduction to common percussion instruments available in the classroom, including rhythm sticks, shakers, chimes, and hand drums. Participants will also explore body percussion, found sound, simple songs, and group singing.

Multicultural Music Residency

New Program Residency Workshop English

A residency offers students the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of multicultural music and instruments. Alicia will teach two songs to each class, in English, Spanish, Swahili or Portuguese. They will learn techniques used to play various percussion instruments and will learn the main elements of music such as: dynamics, pitch, tempo and timbre. They will play with call and response, and working in teams, students will compose simple musical pieces.
