Deidre Hierlihy

Deidre  is an artist/educator. As an artist and a printmaker.  She works a variety of print media including linocut, lithography, drypoint and collograph. What captures her visual imagination about a space determines what media she uses.

Much of her current work is black and white linocut print. Linocut encourages a simplified graphic vision. This medium allows her to focus her attention on and express the patterns that surround us.

Recent work in lithography encourages attention to colour, both real and imagined. Drawing is the basis for her printmaking practice, and lithography expresses her joy in the communicative possibilities of the drawn mark, and in the possibilities of colour.

As an educator, as well as presenting workshops through MASC to students and seniors, she teaches printmaking for adults and mixed media for children at the Ottawa School of Art.  She also coordinates the children and teen program at OSA.

In 2019, she lived in Northern Ireland for 4 months as an artist in residence. She produced a suite of linocuts based on the Irish landscape, as well as engaging with the community as an artist/educator.  She presented a series of printmaking workshops to children in the community and at festivals, and she worked with adults in community centres, day programs and community college.
