Grupo de Capoeira Dendê do Recife

Based in Ottawa, Grupo de Capoeira Dendê do Recife was founded in 2005 by Mestre Fabinho. Its members are dedicated to sharing Capoeira and Afro-Brazilian culture by participating in multiple events and programs for children and adults in the National Capital Region and across Canada. Mestre Fabinho has more than 35 years of experience in the practice of Capoeira. He began his training in northeastern Brazil in Recife in 1986, and has been teaching this art since 1997. He came to Canada in 1999 and is known for the quality of his work and presence in the community. Instrutora Sereia (Chrys) has more than 15 years experience in the practice of Capoeira. In 2002, she began her training in Ottawa under the direction of Mestre Fabinho. She became an instructor in 2010. Mestre Fabinho and instrutora Sereia have participated in many Capoeira events, festivals and ceremonies across Canada, Brazil, Europe and South America.

Capoeira Workshop (2 artists)

Residency Workshop English

Students are introduced to the basic foundations and sequences of Capoeira, as well as the music and history of this art form. All elements are combined, allowing the students to apply what they learned in a game like format.

Music Workshop (2 artists)

Residency Workshop English

Students learn about various folkloric instruments, rhythms and songs from the Northeast part of Brazil. Through playing the instruments and singing different songs, they will be introduced to a variety of different cultural art forms: Samba, Maracatu, Capoeira and Maculélé.

Dance Workshop (2 artists)

Residency Workshop English

This workshop allows students to learn different dances from Brazil: an energetic Frevo, a well-known Samba and finishing with Maracatu. They will learn a sequence of basic movements, be introduced to the history of these dances and finish by applying their newly learned movements to music and song.
