Liz Hanson

Liz Hanson is a classical percussionist who lived in Brazil for three years studying traditional Brazilian percussion. Liz then taught drumming to classrooms all around New York City as teaching artist and then instrumental music to middle school. In Ottawa, Liz teaches for MASC, the OCDSB and Carleton University. Liz says "Drumming has a magical way of connecting people and breaking down social barriers  I think music is innate in humans and I love bringing that out in people.”

Music and Rhythm - drumming workshops for special education classes

Residency Workshop English

In these all-embracing workshops, the students will learn to play and explore a variety of percussion instruments such as bucket drums, double bells, shakers, and sound shapes, including modified instruments for students with mobility and sensory needs. Playing a musical instrument offers a new means of expression that can incorporate movement and vocalizations, or remain instrumental, depending on the student needs. The goal of this workshop is to create a child-centered, supportive, positive environment for joyful music making.

From the Bronx to Brazil - a drumming workshop

Residency Workshop English

Liz brings her experience living in Brazil and New York City into a dynamic drumming workshop. Students will dive right into hip-hop drum games and call and response patterns to create a drumming piece that blends Brazilian rhythms and Hip-hop. Both rhythms share African roots but were born in the Americas and with them we blend the old with the new. Students play on bucket drums, double bells and shakers to create an inclusive experience for all!
