Drama and Acting Classes for students aged 3 – 18 years.

Founded in 2013, The Ottawa Children’s Theatre is dedicated to theatre that is by, for, and about youth. Our mandate comes out of a desire to enrich the lives of children and youth through theatre and the performing arts.

Since the spring of 2020, OCT has developed inventive tactics for online programming. We’ve proven ourselves to be a leader in the field of interactive, virtual drama workshops.

Our MASC workshops provide exciting, process-based programs for both Online and In School needs. We have programming for all age students from JK to Grade 12 in Acting, Improvisation, Creative Drama, Shakespeare, Musical Theatre, Writing for Theatre, and students with Special Needs.

Whether online or in-school, our workshops are highly interactive, skills-based and fun! We emphasize language arts, communication, body awareness, and creative thinking, with innovative approaches to keep us all connected. We’re here to listen and can adapt our programming to the needs of your students.

In this workshop, we’ll be expressing thoughts through script writing while learning how to build narrative, and character. Group writing exercises will allow for an interactive experience, as we engage students to think about world issues and how to construct their perspective.

In this workshop, students will discover some of Shakespeare’s timeless stories and exciting characters. We’ll unlock his playful and beautiful language, speak and act with confidence, and immerse ourselves in a range of different characters. Younger grades will explore characters through sonnets, while older grades will work with short scenes and monologues.

Clowns are characters that we see throughout literature, television, video games and movies. They aren’t played just for laughs – they communicate important thoughts and emotions through physical expression. In this workshop students will learn about clown archetypes such as the Fool, the Jester, and the Trickster and use these to explore meaningful interactions, scenes and stories.

Musical theatre is a “triple threat” of fun, where stories are told through dance and song. In our workshops, students learn specific skills as they sing and dance their way into big emotions and big ideas. Students learn a group song and dance number to perform at the end of the day. A great introduction to Musical Theatre! Requirements: Large space in which to move. Access to a keyboard or piano is desirable.

Every child benefits from an arts experience. Through sensory materials, storybooks/graphic novels, and dramatic play, this workshop creates enriching opportunities for children with Autism and other specialized learning needs. We explore creativity, movement and storytelling, and balance individual expression with collaboration. The result is a workshop that is inventive, inspiring and fun for everyone. Notes: Information about students’ specialized needs are requested at least one week before the start of the workshop. Special support workers are encouraged to participate alongside the students
