Sonia St-Michel
Sonia is a classical Indian dancer trained initially in Ottawa and since 2005 in India by teachers Aloka Panikar and Sujata Mohapatra. She's passionate about somatics and practices the Alexander Technique, Yoga and classical singing. Interested in many facets of performance, she creates works nourished by interdisciplinary influences like storytelling and visual arts. Her practice revolves around rituals, journeys and identity. She performs internationally and receives support from the Quebec and Canada Arts Councils as well as the City of Gatineau. Amongst others she has been presented by the Kalanidhi dance festival in Toronto, the Festival Accès Asie in Montreal, the Festival of India in Ottawa, the Odissi International Dance festival in Orissa. She has been facilitating workshops and residencies as well as performing in schools and community settings for over 15 years. She's curious about how art can stimulate attention, presence, reflexion, concentration, reduce stress and contribute to overall well being. www.soniastmichel.com

Shanti (Peace)
Shanti is a powerful, refined, rhythmic and fluid Indian classical dance performance. A dance form that has its origins in the ancient rituals of temples in India, is presented today on the international scene. The music and dance are mesmerizing, the mythological and folkloric stories are poetic and touching and confer a positive and peaceful message.

Indian Dance Workshop
The workshop begins with a Yoga warm-up to awaken Shakti, our vital energy. The word Taal means rhythm and in India, the drum represents the rhythm of life. Students learn to create and maintain various rhythms using footwork and a system of oral representation of percussive sounds. They explore some Hastas, the gestures of the hands used for mime.

Mime Workshop Abhinaya
The word Abhinaya means "to express" in Indian dance and refers to symbolic positions of hands and mime used to tell stories. Students learn Hastas (hand gestures) and Navarasas (9 emotions) that are used to mimic Indian dance. They learn to represent places, characters, emotions and participate in a creative process inspired by an Indian tale.
