Sonia St-Michel

An avid traveller, on a trip to India, Sonia discovered Indian classical dance. Sonia began training in Ottawa with the Anjali Academy and the Upasana School of dance. With the support of the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute and the Quebec Arts Council she pursued advanced studies in India with Aloka Panikar. She also studied the pakwaj, a percussion instrument used in Odissi music, with Jitendra Swain as well as hindustani vocals with Smt. Meeta Pandit of the Gwalior Gharana. Sonia performs with the Upasana dance company, with the Quebeasia collective and the CHI collective with storyteller Jacques Falquet and director Isabelle Bélisle. Sonia teaches Odissi dance at the Académie de danse de l'Outaouais in Gatineau and is a MASC artist. Her practice is focused on cross-cultural experiences, creating spaces and building bridges between cultures, all while maintaining a respect for tradition.
