MASC Anti-racism statement

In light of the recent tragic deaths of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and too many others, we feel that it is important to state that MASC fervently condemns anti-black racism and all forms of racism that exist in our society.

MASC was founded on the importance of introducing artists of diverse backgrounds to students with the goal of amplifying these artists’ voices and developing a culture of awareness and cultural appreciation through the schools. We proudly continue to forge this path, expanding our audience to all ages. Racism goes against every fibre of our organization and team’s core and we are heartbroken and enraged by these acts. MASC believes in the need of dismantling systemic racism. This means the de-construction of racist laws, processes, procedures, and protocols within all public and private institutions.

We truly believe that “In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist”. - Angela Davis

MASC will commit to, or continue to:
• Ensure our artist roster is rich in diversity
• Amplify the voices of our artists of colour and Indigenous artists
• Provide opportunities for our artists of colour and Indigenous artists to share the true history of oppression and the richness of their culture
• Have diverse representations within our Staff and Board
• Offer professional development to our Staff, Board and Artists
• Ensure equitable access to MASC programming through subsidies and partnerships with diverse communities

There is no place for racism in the arts, in our city, in our country or in this world.

We stand in support of #
