Katherine Grier - Storyteller (Seniors Program)

I love telling stories because they contain the gamut of human experience and emotion.  Subtly, they invite us to consider ourselves — what would I do, how would I feel in this or that situation?  As we recognize ourselves in a story, we often find what we need — courage, strength, comfort, a good laugh…”

Katherine has a broad repertoire of stories.  Some are personal, passed down throughher family or drawn from her own and others’ lives.  Others are folktale or myth, tales honed by generations of tellers and listeners, a cultural inheritance of wisdom, wonder and humour.

Over the years, Katherine hastold many stories and conducted many workshops for children, youth and adults.  She hasperformed at venuesincluding schools, libraries, coffee-houses, prisons, the National ArtsCentre Fourth Stage, andthe Toronto, St. Johns and Ottawa Storytelling Festivals.  The Canada Council for theArts, Newfoundland & Labrador Arts Council, and Ontario Arts Council have allrecognized thevalue of her work.

In 1980s Toronto, Katherine co-developed the Parent-Child Mother Goose Program, a program initially for at-risk parents and their babies and pre-school children based on storytelling and oral language play.  Later she brought it to Newfoundland and Labrador.  The Mother Goose Program is now established in many places across Canada and Australia.  Katherine has also written non-fiction for older children.  Discover: Mysteries of the Past and Present, written for the Royal Ontario Museum, was named an Honour Book by the Children’s Literature Roundtables of Canada.

Katherine describes her most recent focus - mentoring older adults as they shape and telltheir own stories - as fascinating and deeplyrewarding.
