About MASC

MASC is a leading community arts organization based in Ottawa, bringing the arts to over 170,000 children, youth, and seniors each year. We connect professional artists with schools and communities through workshops, performances, festivals, and artist residencies across all artistic disciplines. Our programming reflects Canada’s diversity, promotes cultural exchange, and ensures access to meaningful arts experiences—especially in equity-deserving and rural communities.

Position Overview

MASC is seeking a skilled Educational Resource Developer to lead the creation of a pedagogical framework and a suite of engaging, inclusive, and curriculum-aligned study guides that support our arts education programming. This individual will collaborate with MASC artists and staff to ensure resources are artistically authentic, culturally responsive, and aligned with provincial education standards—including opportunities for alignment with the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program and other Ministry of Education initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a Pedagogical Framework to guide learning before, during, and after MASC programs in school and community settings.
  • Design Study Guides tailored to each major artistic discipline (music, dance, drama, visual arts, media arts, circus, etc.) that include:
  • Artist background and artistic practice
  • Pre- and post-program activities
  • Participation strategies and discussion prompts
  • Curriculum links and assessment ideas
  • Create Cultural Components to provide meaningful context for culturally specific programming (e.g., Afro-Caribbean, Bollywood).
  • Collaborate with Artists and Staff (including SHSM Lead) to ensure resources reflect artistic integrity and align with program and curricular goals.
  • Align Select Programs with SHSM Requirements, recommending updates to program descriptions and outreach materials for better engagement with SHSM leads.
  • Identify Ministry of Education Opportunities for further curricular alignment and recommend program revisions accordingly.
  • Develop Accessible Evaluations for teachers to provide feedback and measure program impact.
  • Embed Inclusive and Differentiated Instructional Strategies to support diverse learners, including those with special needs.
  • Maintain Clear and Collaborative Communication with internal staff, artists, and educators throughout the project.

Qualifications

  • Experience in curriculum development, educational publishing, or instructional design—particularly within the arts or cultural sector.
  • Strong understanding of Ontario education standards and classroom practice, including SHSM and Ministry of Education frameworks.
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive, culturally responsive pedagogy.
  • Familiarity with community arts or arts education is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to synthesize artist input and educational requirements into coherent, accessible guides.
  • Strong writing, editing, and organizational skills.
  • Bilingualism (French/English) is an asset.

Deliverables

  • A comprehensive pedagogical framework for use across MASC programming.
  • Study guide templates adaptable to multiple artistic disciplines.
  • Revised program descriptions and materials aligned with SHSM and other Ministry pathways.
  • Cultural context components to enhance understanding of culturally specific programming.
  • Evaluation tools for teacher use post-program.
